Gothic MB101 is a stately Gothic font that inherits the traditional Gothic font. Thick weights are used for titles and copy expressions as characters that convey the real voice, and thin weights are useful for a wide range of purposes with a family structure of 7 weights, from middle headings such as magazines to text sets

First released as a display cut,

it expanded into heavier weights and was used widely for promotional headlines

As the fonts became digitized, thinner weights were newly added. It became a versatile series appropriate for a range of typographic needs, from banners to body text.

To expand its uses for longform text, a version with smaller kana was newly added.

Gothic MB101 combines the characteristics of a modern Gothic and old-style Gothic. The modern-style Gothic font with strokes all over the body provides readability and visibility in horizontal writing. On the other hand, old-style Gothic has a small face and fluffy character, and has a taste that makes the best use of the original skeleton of the characters. Gothic MB101 is located in the middle and is a traditional yet organized typeface.
Features of kanji
Round accents are attached to the tips of vertical lines to create a warm look without being too simple.
The curved element at the tip of the stroke makes you feel the strength and the flow of the line.
The vertical and horizontal lines are made up of simple straight lines without flares or decorations, giving a modern impression.

Similar to Kanji, the tip of the vertical line has a round accent.

このサイトはモリサワとOccupant Fontsの代表的な書体を紹介するために、バイリンガルな書体見本として開発されました。

Magmatic is a massive sans serif series from Cyrus Highsmith and June Shin. The design was loosely inspired by Japanese Showa-era typefaces found on shipping labels, machinery, and buildings. Its nuts-and-bolts character remains steady through an extensive range of widths and weights, and comes in 30 defined styles.

Features

1. As Magmatic gets narrower, the sides of the round characters get flatter and the corners get more square. This allows them to be spaced extra tight and form compact words.
2. As it gets wider, Magmatic’s curves expand and get rounder. They still retain some squareness so overall flavor of of the design remains consistent.

1. Magmatic is distinguished by its high-waisted uppercase. The white shapes on the lower half are noticabley larger than the ones on top. It’s a subtle feature that helps differentiate it from other sans serifs without being too flashy or gimmicky.
2. Magmatic is a sturdy design. Part of this is thanks to the treatment of the diagonal strokes. When possible, these are kept more upright than usual. These help to form robust structures within letters as well as words.

This website was designed to showcase the classic typefaces by two foundries: Morisawa and Occupant Fonts — as a bilingual type specimen for both English and Japanese audiences.

Occupant Fonts

Founded by Cyrus Highsmith in 2015, Occupant Fonts is relatively young compared to his 20+ years of experience as a type designer. We joined Morisawa in 2017 to be the Japanese type company’s Latin alphabet counterpart. We focus on developing original typefaces.
